Getting to Tucan Lodge
Reaching Tucan Lodge is an adventure in itself. After a 9-hour bus journey from Quito, you will arrive at “El Puente Cuyabeno,” the gateway to the Cuyabeno Reserve. From there, a canoe trip down the Cuyabeno River will take you to the lodge, where your Amazonian adventure begins. As you glide along the river, keep an eye out for monkeys, birds, and other wildlife.
Accommodations and Amenities
Tucan Lodge accommodates up to 24 guests in comfortable huts, each equipped with private bathrooms and showers. The lodge offers a range of amenities, including a relaxing area with hammocks, a platform for river watching, and opportunities to spot pink river dolphins. Guests are guided by accredited naturalist guides and licensed canoe drivers, ensuring a safe and informative experience.
Day 1: Arrival and Introduction
Your adventure begins at 11:00 AM with a canoe trip to the lodge. Upon arrival, enjoy a delicious lunch and some relaxation time. In the afternoon, you’ll explore the river and lagoons, swim, and enjoy the sunset. After dinner, embark on a night canoe expedition in search of caimans. Evening lectures by the naturalist guide provide insights into the Amazon rainforest’s culture, flora, fauna, and conservation efforts.
Day 2: Jungle Hike and Cultural Immersion
After breakfast, set off on a 4-hour hike in the primary forest. Your guide will introduce you to the diverse flora and fauna, including medicinal plants, insects, and birds. After lunch and some relaxation time, you’ll explore the streams in a traditional rowing canoe, enjoy the sunset, and possibly spot pink dolphins. After dinner, taste traditional Amazonian drinks and enjoy a night walk to experience the jungle’s nocturnal life.
Day 3: Community Visit
A highlight of your stay is a visit to the Siona Community. Learn about the preparation of traditional Casabe bread and the customs and traditions of the native people. After lunch, meet a shaman who will explain the jungle’s medicinal plants and rituals. Return to the lodge for dinner and a night walk to conclude your day.
Day 4: Canoeing and Wildlife Observation
Spend the morning exploring the streams and flooded forest in a traditional rowing canoe. Moving silently, you’ll have a better chance of observing monkeys, birds, sloths, and dolphins. After lunch and some relaxation time, you’ll prepare and taste coffee and chocolate in a traditional way. The evening offers more opportunities for wildlife observation or relaxing at the lodge.
Day 5: Farewell to Cuyabeno
Your final day begins with an early morning river exploration to enjoy the sunrise and bird watching. After breakfast, you’ll organize your luggage and take a canoe trip back to the reserve entrance, where your transport back to Quito awaits.
